WHAT WE DO

The Inclusive Muslim Action Network (IMAN) was created in October 2008 to form a collective voice for Muslims in Sandwell. Invitation to the network was extended to various faith organisations as well as Muslim community members.

The IMAN is set up to give the Group a platform to address current issues that are effecting the Muslim community. This work can only be done collectively and with critical friends.

OBJECTIVES

  • To receive, share good practice and consider information, and if required respond to strategic agencies.
  • To be a network forum for discussing Muslim concerns.
  • To recognise and address sensitive issues facing Muslim communities.
  • To jointly raise awareness and understanding of Islam.
  • To act as a critical friend to the local authority and other partners representing the views of the Muslim communities.
  • To foster positive relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims.
  • To be a point of reference and representation for strategic agencies in relation to Muslims and Islam.
  • To ensure that the needs of Muslim communities are taken into account in the development and delivery of key services.
  • To campaign and advocate for appropriate services for Muslim communities in Sandwell.

PRIORITIES

  • Prevent - Prevention of Violence and Exploitation, Female Genital Mutilation, Honour Based Violence, Domestic Abuse, Hate Crime, etc.
  • Engage with Women – raise awareness of issues, help prevent children accessing inappropriate materials, etc.
  • Engage with supplementary schools/provision
  • Interfaith work/cohesion
  • Youth Activities
  • Mental Health - Combat Stigma & underlying issues

MEMBERSHIP

Membership to the Network is open to individuals, professional bodies and organisations that have an interest in the needs of the Muslim community as well as its role in the wider Sandwell community.

MEETINGS

The meetings are every other month and the venue for the meetings are rotated between various local centres. Ownership of the Inclusive Muslim Action Network belongs to all the members.

"Key aims and objectives were set by the group and over the years they have been addressing them alongside partners. We meet bio­monthly at different centres around Sandwell.

As chairman, I set the agenda and invite critical friends to attend an open around the table discussions. This is a network meeting and all are welcome to attend."
